Which makes a better pet: A dog or a cat? – Part 10

Cats make better pets. They have a bad rep, perpetuated through the years by fear, bias, and ignorance of their true qualities. Black cats are seen as bad luck, familiar to the witch, and used in black magic and casting spells. Cats have been said to steal the breath of babies, by sitting on their chests as they sleep, and have a reputation of being sneaky and sly. Cats have an image of being snobby and standoffish, untrainable and unwilling to perform like circus animals, directly opposite of dogs.

It’s true that Cats can be sneaky, but they are by nature, quiet, and light of foot. Dogs bound, cats slink. Cats are naturally nocturnal, so they sleep most of the day and are active most often at night. This only encourages peoples’ perception that they are sneaky. They also have the ability to jump onto higher levels, often getting onto counter tops, shelving, or the refrigerator. They are lightweight and curious, so they often explore areas that humans don’t expect them, or want them to, explore.

To say that a cat can not be trained is simply untrue. Cats are very smart and are capable of many different tricks and abilities. Cats can be trained to fetch, jump, roll over, play dead, sing; anything a dog can be trained to do. Cats generally do as they please, however, and will only ‘perform’ if they want to. It’s very difficult to convince a cat to do anything they don’t really want to do. Dogs on the other hand, live to satisfy their humans. However, like dogs, cats want to please you, and can be trained; they require consistency so if you don’t have the time to train a cat to do or not do something, don’t blame it on the cat.

They are also very sensitive to humans and their feelings. Like Dogs, Cats can pick up a sense of fear in humans, and can also feel our sadness, joy, despair, etc., and can exhibit compassion and love. Cats have been known to travel far distances to return to their humans, as have dogs.

There are many qualities of a cat that make them better than dogs, but the bottom line depends on what a person is looking for in a pet. Cats are more self-reliant, and can be left alone for longer periods of time than a dog. Dogs require more human attention, more exercise, more food and are quite content to follow their people anywhere. Cats are much more independent and free-thinking.
