What you need to consider before getting a pet – Part 13

There is so much to consider before buying a pet. After all, depending what type of pet you buy, it could be with you for many years, need lots of attention and cost a fortune.

So first things first.

DECIDE WHAT PET YOU WOULD LIKE.

Consider all breeds and sizes in order to find the right pet for you. It may be that a dog is perfect however, it could be that a cat, fish, reptile, bird or rabbit, to name but a few, would be more suitable.

WHO IS THE PET FOR.

I know this point sounds a little silly but often the pet is for a child and not really appropriate. Decide if the pet is for the adults of the house or a child and buy accordingly.

HAVE YOU REALLY ENOUGH TIME AND ENERGY

All pets require some care and attention but obviously some require more than others. Again research your purchase well.

COSTS AND BUDGET

Having two dogs I know only two well what the basic costs are. However you will need to take into account vets bills, insurance, health bills, kennels, toys, beds, cages and numerous other expenses. Work out the projected budget before you buy a pet to asses whether you can really afford to give it the care it needs and deserves.

RESEARCH

Once you have decided which pet is for you read and learn as much as you can about this breed before you purchase. This will help you to care for it properly and finally decide if it is the right purchase for you.

LOCATION

Consider the size of you house and gardens and where this pet will be housed. Do you really have the room ?

COMMITMENT

Do you have the commitment to care for a pet long term. For example if you take a dog as a pet and have to return it, as it does not work out, it is very hard and traumatic for the animal. It can also be upsetting for you and your family so make sure a pet is really wanted and not just a passing phase.

CONCLUSION

No matter what creature becomes your pet it is a living being and deserves fair treatment. Keeping dogs over the years has taught me that pets can be expensive, loving, troublesome, naughty, playful, fun, amusing, heartbreaking and hard work at times. Overall though they give a lot of love and teach children, who are pet owners, a great deal about life. However unless you are going to take care of them, even when they are old and not such fun, you should not really consider having a pet in the first place.
