Many people in the world own pets. Some are dog lovers, some are cat lovers, and there are some that prefer birds or even fish. Owning a pet is a big responsibility; one that should not be taken lightly when considering getting a pet for the family. Before getting that family pet, here are some things that you should take into consideration.
First of all, if you are renting your home, you have to check with your landlord before getting a pet. Some landlords will not allow a cat or dog, but are okay with birds, fish, or another animal that has to live in a cage. Some landlords will allow any pet, as long as it lives outdoors, and other landlords are okay with an indoor pet. You do not want to get a pet for your family only to find out that you are not able to keep it.
Second, you should really take into consideration the care that the pet will require from you. A dog, for instance, needs food, water, attention, and to be walked several times a day. Not to mention, if the dog has an accident on the floor, you will have to clean it up. A cat needs food and water, but often does not want as much attention as a dog would. You don’t have to take the cat for a walk either, but you do have to buy cat litter and clean it regularly. Now, fish require very little. Yes, you have to feed them, and you have to maintain their tank, but you do not have to worry about taking the fish for a walk, or changing the fish’s litter box. In my opinion, fish are the easiest pets to have.
Third, you have to be sure that you can afford the pet. Food for a pet is not free, you have to buy it. If you want to get a dog or cat, you may also be facing vet bills to ensure the health of your pet. It would be unfair to an animal to give it a home, but not see to its needs.
Fourth, you should be sure that your home will accommodate the pet that you want. If you live in an apartment or small home, it would not be a good idea to get a St. Bernard. You do not want your family or your pet to feel overcrowded in the living space.
Sixth, if you have children, you should take into consideration how they will react towards the pet you are considering. Not all children will react favorably to having a new puppy in the house.
Seventh, you should really evaluate your schedule to determine what amount of time you are able to devote to a pet. As I said before, a dog requires being walked several times a day. If you are not home very much during the day, a dog is probably not the right pet for you. You want to be able to have a reasonable amount of time to devote to any pet you choose so that both you and the pet benefit. If it feels like having a pet is going to be more of a hassle than a reward, you should reconsider your choice.
Having a family pet can be a very rewarding experience for both the family, as well as the animal. By taking things into consideration and really evaluating the situation, you can easily determine what kind of pet is right for all of you.

If you are a pet owner, then for sure by now you know that you have to have a certain number things to keep your beloved pet well cared for and happy. However; do you have absolutely everything that you need? For instance, if you are a dog or cat owner then you should have a first aid and health maintenance kit at the ready at all times.
Basic Health Needs
Vet bills have skyrocketed over the last decade, to the point that a trip to the vet can be comparable in cost to a trip to a doctors office. This is only more reason to have all that you need to tend to your animals basic health needs. The first thing that you might consider putting on your list, is some basic nutritional supplements for your pet, so you can rest assured that it is getting all of its vitamins and minerals.
Worm Medicine
Next, you should have flea and tick medicine at the ready. Sprinkle some in your pets bedding every now and then, so you can head off major outbreaks before they happen. A once a month worm treatment is also highly recommended and this is particularly true if your pet is coming into contact with other animals.
Sensitive Skin
Also, many breeds of dogs and cats have skin that is susceptible to rashes. To prevent this problem, you will need proper skin medication and special soap if your pet is one of these breeds. It is also advisable to keep some topical antibiotic cream or serum on hand, so any cuts that your pet gets don’t turn into major infections that will require a trip to the vet.
Bargain Online Sources
Right now the best place to find all of these and other pet care products is online. Sure, your local pet store has some of what you need, but they just won’t have the broad selection that you will find with todays online sources. Also, due to their high overhead expenses, you are going to have to pay more for your pet care products at your local pet store.

Taking care for your pet’s health on a daily basis will prevent those outrageous vet bills. Proper pet care is simple and relatively inexpensive. If you properly care for your pet, then you will only have to visit the vet for those yearly vaccinations!
There are simple things you can to save on veterinary expenses:
1.) Yearly check-ups. Take your pet to the vet once a year for its yearly physical and vaccinations.
2.) Feed high quality food. Don’t go cheap when it comes to feeding your pet. The better the food, the healthier your pet will be.
3.) Exercise your pet. You don’t have to walk them everyday, but walk them once a week at the bare minimum. If you have a cat, then have plenty of toys that it can chase.
4.) Keep those teeth clean! Many pet owners neglect their pet’s teeth. This is a big no-no. You must help keep the teeth free from tarter and plaque. The pet cannot brush its teeth, so you must be responsible for keeping its teeth healthy. You can buy chews for dogs that contain enzymes that help prevent tarter build up.
5.) Don’t forget that heartworm preventative pill. Get your dog tested your heartworms, then put them on heartworm preventative. Heartgard is the most common preventative. It is a simple chew that tastes great and is given once a month. Keep it on your calender and remember to give it to your dog once a month, every month, to prevent heartworms.
6.) Use flea and tick preventative. Keep your dog and cat free from pests. You can buy flea and tick spray from your local pet stores or you can buy more advanced protection from your vet clinic. Fleas and ticks carry diseases that can be deadly, so it is important to protect your pet and home.
7.) Keep toxins where your pet cannot get into them. Don’t let your pet be the victim of unintentional poison. Keep things that are harmful to your pet locked in a cabinet so that your pet cannot accidentally get into them.
If you follow these simple guidelines, then you will save yourself a lot of money on vet bills. Your pet will live a longer, healthier life if you take proper care of them.
You and your pet will be much happier together.

In this article we look at 10 ways to care for your dog so that you can develop a healthy, happy and rewarding relationship with them.
Tip 1 Make sure that your dogs collar has attached to it an identification tag that shows their name, your name and your contact details. Generally it is best if you just place a phone number on it which you can be contacted. By including this on your dogs collar you are increasing the chances of him or her being returned to you if they get lost or runaway.
Tip 2 You need to find out what the laws are regards to registering your dog and having them vaccinated. Today it is a legal requirement that all animals that are kept as pets are fitted with a microchip. This can be done by your vet and is generally placed between the shoulder blades and costs around $50. There are some microchips which just provide an identification number, whilst others are designed to actually read the animals temperature as well. Once the information is entered into a database and should your dog get lost they will be returned to you a lot quicker.
Tip 3 Whenever you are taking you dog for a walk it is important that they are always on a leash. Also check with your local authorities because you may find that certain breeds are classed as dangerous dogs and may be required to be muzzled when out in public.
Tip 4 Although you dog may be inside most of the time, when they are still make sure that they have adequate shelter, especially if you intend to leave them there for a while. Although they may be kept outside you should also spend time with them as well and these are pack animals and so they like to be with others.
Tip 5 You should make sure that you arrange for your dog to be checked over regularly by your vet. This way if anything unusual is noted they will be able to treat it much more quickly and which could save you on your vet bills in the future.
Tip 6 Unless you are intending to breed, it is important that you have them spayed or neutered. Many dogs after having this routine surgery carried out tend to live much longer and tend to be much healthier and have far less behavioural problems.
Tip 7 It is important that you provide your dog with a well balanced nutritional diet and make sure they have easy access to fresh water. This is especially important if you intend to feed your dog only dried food. When it comes to which food to give your dog as there are so many different kinds available it may be advisable to discuss the issue with your vet first. Certainly many owners today prefer to feed dried dog food simply because it is must easier and also contains the right balance of nutrients, minerals and vitamins that dogs need. You could also prepare fresh meals for your dog which you can then freeze and give to them each day.
Tip 8 If you have never owned a dog before then it is worth your while enrolling them in some obedience training classes. This way you can learn the most humane and safe ways to control your dog, this provides you with a chance to bond much more closely with your animal. Your vet should be able to recommend a class for you, plus there are plenty who advertise in local newspapers and dog magazines. Before joining such classes go along and check them out first and speak with other dog owners who attend them.
Tip 9 Although your dog may have the garden to run around in, it is worth actually taking them for much longer walks as well. It provides them with the opportunity to explore new areas so not only are they getting the physical exercise they need but the mental as well. Ideally you should be trying to walk your dog at least twice a day. However, this may differ from breed to breed and if you are unsure how much exercise your dog needs then speak to your vet.
Tip 10 It is important that you groom you dog regularly, especially if you own a large dog or a dog with a long coat. As you are grooming them you can actually carry out some simple health checks as well. It is best to start at the head and work your way down. You need to check their eyes, ears, nose and mouth to make sure that they are all clean, clear and bright. If you notice any discharge or foul smells then arrange for your vet to carry out a more thorough inspection. After checking them over then it is a good idea to bath and then groom your dog. As well as getting rid of any unwanted guests on their body you are also helping to remove any loose hair.
Above we have shown you 10 ways to care for your dog. If you keep the above tips in mind then you will find that not only does your dog remain healthy, but they will be much happier too.
