Loyalty: Dogs vs. cats – Part 1

Having owned both dogs and cats, I don’t think there is any difference in the degree of loyalty exhibited by these animals. They are very different types of animals, and so may display this loyalty in different ways.
I’m going to go ahead and say this even though it will have dog people up in arms, but dogs are unquestionably not as intelligent as cats. They are more trainable than cats, but being trainable and being intelligent are two very different things. Dogs show their loyalty in being protective, in being affectionate and sometimes in responding to the sound of your voice.
Cats being more intelligent and more emotional than dogs show their loyalty in different ways, even by being vindictive, such as peeing in an unacceptable place when you go away and leave them home for a day or two. They too can be affectionate, tend to be less friendly towards strangers and will proudly present you with gifts of freshly killed birds and rodents.
One thing to keep in mind about dogs and cats is the key difference in how we came to keep them as pets. Dogs were animals we actively domesticated as working and to some extent companion animals. Cats (perhaps another notch in the why they are more intelligent argument) chose to become domesticated. Cats came to us, and bartered their services in keeping mice out of the grain in exchange for a warm place to sleep and the occasional table scrap. It’s no wonder then, that the behavior of these two different animals is so different and that they in turn show their loyalty in different ways.

A companion in the form of a dog is the best deal one can have in life. Dogs are known for their loyalty and warmth which they show towards their owner and will go to any lengths to protect him. It is said that it is better to care for a dog than a human being for who knows when the said relation might betray you. To care for these canine companions, one needs to be ready forever with a handsome amount. And the fact that your pet is vulnerable to diseases any time, it is better to be ready from the word go. Dog insurance is offered by number of companies these days that cover illnesses, which might strike your pet dog. One can take care of the health of these animals with the help of an insurance policy and the cost of the expensive medical bills can thus be covered in an effective manner. Rising costs is another area of concern which impels the customers to go for the insurance policy of their dogs.
Dog insurance policy covers indigenous, cross bred or exotic dogs which come under the category of pets, watch dogs, sheep dogs and hunting dogs. It provides insurance against death due to accident or diseases during the period of insurance of the dogs. Insured dogs are usually identified by the methods like tattooing, nose print and the colored photographs. Dog insurance policy can be covered under the following sections like death by accident in transit by air, rail, road, and water or show risk. Also, your pet can be covered under liability for personal injury and damage to property within the worldwide transit clause. It was reported that in the year 2007, Americans spent more than $12 billion in veterinary care alone. Now, this speaks volumes about the lengths which people go, to care for their dogs with the help of reasonable financial resources.
In many countries, policies have been introduced to cover the purchase price of the animal if an accidental death occurs. Usually, general care and emergency situations are handled with the help of insurance policy and directly affects the premiums paid. In a number of cases, partial and permanent disability of any nature is covered including canine distemper and Leptospirosis. However, these diseases can be prevented with the help of periodic inoculation drives undertaken by the veterinary department. Dog insurance policy actively assists in a long life for these faithful animals and allows you to plan a lifestyle which is free from the worries for your pets. This means that you don’t have to bother about the next package to cover the expensive veterinary bills of your dog. Mostly, insurance policy for dogs starts from $25 month though the premiums can vary due to the age and breed of the dog and also on the type of coverage one applies for.
Dog insurance policy makes one to care for his pet even during his old age. Most of the pet insurance companies nowadays, provide coverage for the old dogs but with an additional charge. In case of a congenital disorder or an accident, an insurance company is not liable to pay for these charges. Usually, pet insurance companies don’t ask for medical history of the dog and provide the insurance cover for them. The decision to go for a particular policy depends, however, upon the policy holder according to his pet’s specific needs which might be situational.
Loyalty: Dogs vs. cats

Dogs’ ancestors lived in groups, and therefore developed fairly elaborate social behavior. Pet dogs view their families as packs in which the different members (including themselves) hold certain ranks. The dominant family member, for example,is seen as the alpha dog by your pet. So dogs tend to be concerned with their relationships with the people they live with, and are anxious about maintaining their status.
Cats, on the other hand, are not social animals by nature. In the wild, their ancestors led the lives of solitary hunters, usually coming together only to mate. Because of this, cats don’t have that innate drive to be social which we see in dogs.
This doesn’t mean that cats aren’t as faithful as dogs, however. Both species have lived with humans for thousands of years, and have learned how best to interact with their owners. Being dependent on humans, faithfulness benefits both cats and dogs. Faithfulness seems to vary more according to individual intelligence and personality than to species.
Pets: The choice between a cat or a dog – Part 10

If you are not prepared to care and show affection for a cat or a dog then you don’t deserve a choice. Buy yourself a pet rock instead. That way you will get back from the rock exactly what effort it takes to care for the rock. The real bonus is that you cant abuse a rock like a cat or dog. No animal suffers .
Cats and dogs may be dumb in that they can’t speak but many people confuse dumb with intelligence. Any dog or cat owner can relate endless stories attesting to their pet’s talents and ,in the sounds made by a cat or dog ,to a pet owner’s ear it’s as good as conversation.
Despite the fact that we often attribute human values to cats and dogs it is also wise to remember that they are not human ,they are another species of animal. For that reason you should never allow young children around cats and dogs unsupervised. Dogs can turn on children and cats can inflict bites and scratches depending on circumstances which may or not be the child’s fault. All “would be” pet owners should acquire a book either on cat or dog care and read it from cover to cover before taking ownership. It just may help in the decision to own a cat or dog and may save that animal from ending up in a pound if the effort of caring appears too onerous.
If you want utter loyalty and can give hours of your time then the dog is for you. If you want utter loyalty and can give hours of your time, but not all at once, then a cat is for you. Either way respect that loyalty and you will reap the rewards that come with caring for your very own special cat or dog.
