Should ownership of dangerous breeds of dogs be banned – Part 1

There is no such thing as a dangerous breed of dog. There are only dangerous dog owners.

Many breeds have gotten bad reputations due to improper dog handling. Rottweilers, Pit Bulls, Dobermans, and German Shepherds have all acquired an unfair bad reputation over the years.

The owner makes the dog.

Puppies, like children, are able to be molded into anything. Without proper handling, dogs will grow up to be aggressive and not well-behaved.

Over the years, I have seen pit bulls that are nicer than labs and labs who will bite anyone.

There are certain breeds that are, by nature, high-strung or need more attention. These are breeds that require certain types of owners.

Owners need to be educated before they buy a dog. They need to research dog breeds and determine if it is the right one for them.

Dogs need jobs. Dogs cannot be bored or they will start thinking of how to entertain themselves.

If you cannot be home with the dog, then don’t get a dog who needs lots of attention. I hate seeing a Pit Bull on a chain attached to a tree in the front yard. Why did that person have to get a dog in the first place? Of course that dog is going to be aggressive because it is lonely and grumpy.

I believe that all potential dog owners should be required to take a dog education class. In fact, I think that elementary schools and middle schools should incorporate dog education into the curriculum.

They need to teach children respect. Respect for dogs of all breeds. We need to teach the younger generations the proper way to act around dogs.

Even with proper training, dogs still have a mind of their own. They can still do something they were not trained to do. They usually will only do so if they are provoked.

Teaching respect for dogs will help eliminate many problems related to dog bites and young children.

No one should train their dog to attack on command until it is a police or competition dog. Dogs are loyal by nature and will protect their family to the death. You do not have to teach them to be loyal. All you have to do is respect them and train them properly. Then they will love you and protect you if you are ever threatened.

Do yourself a favor and educate yourself before buying a new dog. Educate yourself on the breed and determine if it is the right breed for you. Then find a local trainer and get training tips for that breed.

Help eliminate the unfair prejudice against certain breeds by educating yourself and your family.
