Pet ownership in an economic recession – Part 3

Feeding and caring for your pet during tough economic times can be a challenge, but it is not impossible. Stores like PetCo and PetsMart carry many brands of pet food and pet care supplies at cheaper prices, and often have free store cards that offer additional sales and coupons to registered customers. Ask for their store circulars each week for the sale items. The discount pet care stores also carry the smaller sizes of pet food in case your furry friend is also a bit finicky – this allows you try a different flavor or brand to see how well your pet may tolerate a certain food before getting a larger version, and before spending more money. The larger discount chains do carry the specialty items as well, so be assured that you should find what you need in the larger stores that are dedicated to our animal friends’ fickle palates.

The regular wholesale clubs also have pet food in bulk at discount prices – however, their selection is not as varied. If you are looking for a general food for your pet, the wholesale clubs (such as BJ’s or Sam’s Club) may have what you need. If you need more specialized nutrition or you have a more unique type of pet, then stores such as PetsMart or PetCo would be better suited to your pet’s needs.

National retailers such as 1-800-Pet-Meds offer your pet’s medications (such as flea, tick, and heartworm), maintenance treatments (supplements and vitamins), and specialty care products at a discounted price. If you order from 1-800-PetMeds, you can get discounted health and wellness products, reminders on when your pet’s medications are due for renewal, and they offer generic brands on many products at a cheaper price. Try to avoid purchasing products through your veterinarian’s office – they often charge a higher price for the same items. 1-800-PetMeds can contact your veterinarian if a prescription is needed, and they will let you know if an office visit is needed before the prescription can be refilled. At their website (, they also allow you set up profiles of your animals to make ordering and refilling the right products easier the next time you visit.

Whether you shop online, by phone or in person, there are plenty of options and ways to save money while still taking great care of your animal companion.
