Holistic pet care – Part 1

Many people are unaware that they have a second choice to regular veterinary medicine. With the new revolutions regarding holistic medicine for humans, holistic medicine for our pets does not get much notice. Part of this results in the fact that most practicing holistic veterinarians are located in the major cities. I have yet to find one in a rural area!

Like many humans, pets are also becoming over-vaccinated and medicated. That’s why there are many benefits to holistic medicine for your pets, as anyone familiar the practice could tell you. It’s easier on your pets immune system, and their body as a whole. Instead of treating symptoms it works towards building immunity and working towards finding the direct cause to an illness. You would be surprised to find how often your pets diet can be the root of all sorts of problems! In a basic sense, holistic medicine conditions the body to fight off illness on it’s own.

There is a lot of information out there about holistic medicine for animals, if you know where to find it. There are a few websites out there, just type in “holistic vets” on your search engine and you can check out some interesting sites. There are also several books available (These surpass any of the sites I’ve seen) Dr.Pitcairn’s Complete Guide to Natural Health for Dogs and Cats is a good one in my opinion. There is information on natural health for nearly any kind of animal, including farm animals (Check out Countryside Magazine).

Some of the information available includes herbs, essential oils, aroma therapy, massage, acupuncture, natural flea and tick treatments (for your house and pet), even how to make your own pet food. You have to look to find the information, but it is out there, and it’s worth looking for- for you and your pet!
