Dogs: Some Information Regarding Cairn Terrier Pet Dogs
If you are thinking of getting a Cairn terrier pet dog, then you need to know some information about it first. Why? Well, knowing the right information about anything will help you in the long run. This is especially true when we are talking about a pet ownership. Before you get a Cairn terrier pet dog, you need to be sure that you know what you are getting yourself into. You need to know how to take proper care of your cairn terrier pet dog and you also need to know what to expect when you are getting one.
Thankfully, there are a lot of sites on the internet which can provide you the necessary information. To save you some time, however, here are the basics:
Originally bred in the Scottish highlands, the Cairn terrier is the smallest of all terrier breeds. You should not let the size deceive you when you are getting a Cairn terrier pet dog, however. The Cairn terrier was first bred because of its working ability. You know what this means? This means energy.
A Cairn terrier pet dog has a lot of energy to spare. They can gain a lot from taking brisk walks daily. However, you should know that they do best when they have a fenced-in yard to play in. This way, they get more room when they play. Their high energy also means that they aren’t really suitable for apartment or condo living. If you live in such places, then having a Cairn terrier pet dog is not for you.
Their energy may also put them in danger. This is the reason why you need to make sure that a Cairn terrier pet dog stays in one area. Their natural instincts tell them to dig and run and these activities may lead to accidents if unsupervised.
There are, however, a lot of positive things that can be said about a Cairn terrier pet dog’s energy. For one thing, it makes the dog fun to play with. It can play for hours on end, giving you the companionship that you want. Another positive with this energy is the fact that this energy can be channeled into good purposes. A Cairn terrier pet dog is naturally inquisitive and is always willing to participate in a new adventure. This means that a Cairn terrier pet dog can be easily taught to do tricks. They learn tricks very fast and thrive in obedience training.
You need to make sure that your Cairn terrier pet dog is trained properly since untrained ones have a tendency to be destructive when they are bored.
Let us talk about the proper care for a Cairn terrier pet dog. One thing you do not need to worry about is its coat. The Cairn terrier pet dog was not bred for the beauty of its coat. The coat of a Cairn terrier pet dog is weather resistant and sheds little to no fur. Because of this, it can be a great indoor pet.
Being the smallest of terrier breeds, however, makes Cairn terrier pet dogs especially vulnerable to various health problems. Care must be taken when feeding it as it can gain weight quite rapidly. A Cairn terrier pet dog is also especially sensitive to fleas. However, you can be sure that this is one of the best breeds around.
How to Get Your Cat to Stop Clawing the Furniture in 3 Easy Steps
Cats claw things because it is instinct. Unfortunately for you, your cat may claw YOUR things. Don’t expect your cat to be trained to never claw anything because the cat needs to shed its nails, which is why it has the urge to claw. This does not mean you have to de-claw your cat. I personally believe that de-clawing cats is cruel and unnatural. It affects their personality and is very traumatic. I can, however, provide some easy tips on how to keep your cat from ruining your furniture. Here are three easy steps to keep your cat from scratching up your things and give you peace of mind.
Step One: Provide plenty of things that your cat is allowed to scratch.
You may try different types of scratch pads and posts to see which ones your cat prefers. You can find such items at your local pet supply store and prices vary, however, most scratch pads are fairly inexpensive. To help coax your cat to the new scratch post, you may try sprinkling some cat nip on the pad or post to entice your cat to rub its scent on it. This will lure your cat back to the scratch pad or post over and over again.
Step Two: Use double-sided tape on your furniture.
Your cat may like its new scratching toy; however, it may find itself still interested in a piece of your furniture. If this is the case, try putting some double-sided tape in the places the cat likes to scratch and once the cat puts one paw on the tape it will quickly try to get away. Cats don’t like sticky stuff, so they won’t try to paw at the tape more than once. Pet stores carry large pieces of double-sided tape specifically for training cats not to scratch your furniture. The tape does not have to stick around permanently. After attempting to claw at the taped furniture your cat will likely not return again. I suggest keeping the tape on the furniture for about a week.
Step Three: Keep your cat’s nails trimmed.
Because cats needs to shed their nails, they find that scratching things helps to remove the loose layers of nail, hence why your cat claws at furniture or other items in your house. Your local pet supply store sells clippers and nail files that can be used safely to trim your cat’s nails to help with the shedding process. Your cat may not like it at first, but if you keep it up on a weekly basis your cat will eventually get used to the process. I suggest giving your cat a treat or a good petting after clipping its nails. Because your cat’s nails are trimmed your cat will be less interested in clawing at things to shed its nails. The difference is noticeable. A cat with long un-trimmed nails will constantly claw at things to help the shedding of its claws, but if you keep the trimming up, you’ll see how much less often your cat will have the need to claw or scratch on surfaces.

Therefore, it is a necessity to understand how to operate your business regarding fees, overhead, and other financial and time considerations.
Having a thriving, rewarding dog training career might be just what you need in your life. If you love dogs and want to work with them on a daily basis then consider starting a dog training career.
Why cats are difficult to train – Part 7
It is a myth that cats are not trainable. Watch a tiger or lion in a circus sometime. I have also seen cats playing ping-pong, standing up and begging and many other tricks. Think your cat is untrainable? Just turn on the electric can-opener, shake a "treat box" or rattle certain dishes and see if your cat doesn’t come running! Cats are trainable, but everyone agrees they are difficult to train.
One of the difficulties is a cat’s independence. They do not seem to be as dependent on humans as dogs do. They certainly are not as eager to please their owners as dogs are. Most of the time they act as if they don’t care if their owners are pleased at all! Perhaps this is because they are independent and loners in their own species. Cats hunt and play alone for the most part. To overcome this tendency, pick out "tricks" that go along with the cat’s nature. They are easily trained to come to dinner, or use a litter box. These two "tricks" they would do anyway. We were able to train our cat to fetch. He would do it regularly when he wanted to play. When he got tired, no amount of bribery with treats would entice him to fetch. So, we considered him trained and made sure if we wanted him to show off, he was in a playful mood.
Kittens are easier to train, mainly because they always want to play and always seem to be hungry! I am currently training my two kittens to stand up and beg. They are always willing to do this for a treat. Often they are standing and begging even when I have not asked them to! Ah, such is the nature of cats.
Using a combination of reward, such as a treat, and punishment can help to train a cat to refrain from a negative behavior such as scratching furniture, drapes and carpets. Say "no", or squirt a bit of water on them, take them to their scratching post and demonstrate the use of it, then reward them for their independent use by giving them a treat. Nothing tickles a cat more that watching their owner diligently scratching the scratching post!
Remember, too, that cats are primarily nocturnal. They prefer to sleep during the day and are even less anxious to show off tricks then that at night. If you want to lose some sleep, you may be able to communicate more effectively with your cat at night.
There have been many debates about the intelligence of a cat vs a dog, especially when it comes to training. I will not get into that argument! I will say I think cats are much smarted in training their human owners! My cats know just how to act to get a treat! They lovingly thread around my ankles until I can’t walk. Cats are intelligent enough to read. I know this because if I am reading a paper or have several books open on the table, my cat will always lay exactly where I am reading. This includes picking the right book I am using! One cat has me well trained to let him out the door, regardless of the time of day. He jumped unexpectedly onto the middle of my chest. The same cat announces when his food bowl is empty by chewing on my foot. Don’t tell me cats are dumb!
I guess it all boils down to which is more difficult to train, the human or the cat! I know who is in our house!
Pet health insurance: Is it a good idea? – Part 1
Two years ago next month a bundle of joy came into my life. His name is Undertaker. He is a Shepard, Collie, Pit bull mix who I just adore. When my husband and I first got Undertaker we did a lot of research to figure out the best way to care for him and which would be the cheapest for us.
We called around to our local vetrinarain offices to ask how much they charge for shots and neutering and just basic healthcare. We quickly grew discouraged. The prices were outrageously high. We didn’t want to give up that easily so we kept on calling. Finally, after what seemed like ages we came across a great deal. It was a form of animal insurance. My husband and I had to pay about $100 up front and then only $21.95 a month every month after that. We are able to cancel at anytime we wish. This truly seemed like the perfect fit.
Under our specific insurance plan just about everything we wanted to be covered was. All of his shots and to our suprise even his neutering were covered. The vet office even gives us a report card everytime we bring Undertaker in giving us detailed information on how he is doing and how he is growing. One of the only things they really don’t cover under this specific plan is any medication. The great thing is anything that isn’t covered they let you know before hand and ask if you would still like to recieve the procedure. There are no hidden fees. This plan has at this point in his 2 years of life saved us so far about $2,000. One of the best features is if god forbid something happened I don’t even have to call and make an appointment, we can just bring him in. They also have different levels of insurance that you can choose from whether you want it to cover more or less the choice is generally up to you.
If you are an animal lover, like so many of us are, then animal insurance is the way to go. It truly is the best care your pet can get. In todays economic times we are all looking for ways to cut back and save money. You shouldn’t have to cut back on your pet care. Animal insurance is an excellent way to save thousand of dollars on your pets well being.
Do your research and find out if any vetrinarian offices near you offer any kind of animal insurance. Don’t be afraid to ask questions and find out exactly what is covered. There should be plans to fit all kinds of budgets whether big or small. Because most of us want what is the very best for our loved ones, animal insurance is surely the way to go.
Dog training: Train the owner, not the dog – Part 1
Dogs are very different to humans. They are smaller, covered in hair and have tails. But apart from this, the human brain is much more complex and developed than a dogs brain. Surely then this leads to the conclusion that humans know more about how to train dogs? That humans know how to treat them in order to train them? So you would think….
Dogs are overall extremely loyal animals, providing they get the love and care that they need. Walk them, feed them, clean them, love them and play with them, and the likelihood is that they’ll be very well trained and obedient.
However, some people have it in their minds that dogs need to be shouted at to get through to them because they don’t think they understand, so end up shouting and getting frustrated. This only winds the dog up and so the likelihood of getting them to do what you want them to do is very low. Try lowering tour tone and volume and giving them treats every time they do something good, and they’ll soon catch on.
I’ll never be able to understand why some people take their frustrations of everyday life out on their pets, but I can imagine their reasoning stems from the fact that they are not as clever as humans and that they do not matter as much and they they won’t mind. Even though that is true that dogs are not as clever as humans, they have feelings and emotions, and are very intelligent. Treat them with respect, and they will respect you.
How to make your cat gain weight
One day you may notice that your formerly fluffy, healthy, well-nourished cat is beginning to look positively scrawny. As a devoted owner you are, of course, worried.
Make an appointment with your veterinarian. The problem may be caused by an underlying disease, such as diabetes.
Meanwhile, do a little detective work on your own. You may be able to pinpoint the problem and help the vet make a quick and accurate diagnosis. Here are possible causes of weight loss in cats:
* Worms or parasites are often the cause of skinny cats.
* The cat may have dental problems which make eating painful..
* If you allow your pet to go outdoors, it may be eating something that upsets it: lizards, toads or insects. Cats have been known to eat dead birds or squirrels. When your pet grooms itself, it will swallow the fleas, if any are present.
* It may be ingesting insecticides or chemicals from lawns or plants
Mosquito bites may cause heart worms which result in death. Outside cats need heart worm tests and preventative medication.
If the cat has access to a dumpster or trash cans, it may have been bitten by a rat. Watch for wounds, swelling, or pain when you pet it.
It your cat is an indoor pet, allow it outside for a short period of time. It will seek its own natural remedy. Cats instinctively know which grasses and plants will ease discomfort..
Older cats may experience a decrease in appetite. They sometimes lose their senses of smell and taste. Their systems may be less efficient at absorbing nutrients.
After you’ve visited the veterinarian and received a clean bill of health for your pet, here are some suggestions to help your cat add a few pounds:
- Choose a super premium cat food. Experiment until you find one your cat really likes.
- Warm the food to body temperature.
- Dry food and water may be left out all the time.
- Try to keep the cat as stress-free as possible.
- Minimize noise and distractions during feeding times.
- Offer frequent treats such as tuna and salmon which have been canned in oil.
- Offer high-protein morsels such as chicken or steak from the family dinner table.
- Offer frequent drinks of homogenized milk or a mixture of half milk and half cream if the cat will tolerate it.
- Praise and encourage your pet in a soft voice while it is eating.
If, after two weeks of following this routine, the cat has not regained most of its weight, make a second appointment with the veterinarian. It’s time for more thorough investigation and more intensive testing. Cats can be targeted by many of the same illnesses as humans: kidney disease, heart problems, diabetes and cancer. On the brighter side, most of these ailments are treatable and with care, your pet may live out a normal, comfortable life span.
Bathtime for pet dogs – Part 4
Bathing a dog
Bathing a dog needs to be given more emphasis. This is because of the fact that if you are careless in bathing, the animal may end up having some infections. For example, if you don’t close the ears with large cotton ball, the water may enter into ear canals and may cause some ear infections with signs like constant discharge from the ears and shaking of head.
Frequency of bathing actually depends on the breed of the dog. If the dog is of a hairy type like the cocker spaniel, then the bathing is to be carried out once in six to eight weeks. If these breeds are bathed too frequently, then the skin and coat loose the protective characters. However, when the dog has defecated on the skin due to the frequent digestive upsets leading to diarrhea, to avoid the bad smell, the dog may be subjected to frequent bathing some times by the owners.
Take more care in avoiding some irritant soaps or human soaps. The soap materials used for human beings are not suitable for dogs. Similarly, many human shampoo products are having some ingredients that are not suitable in the proportions that are to be used in case of dogs. Hence, always try to use the shampoo products that are mentioned mainly for use in dogs. Take more care in using any new product.
Always have good time and patience for products required for bathing in one place with availability of water source. Dogs love the sprinkling of water, river, and oceans. Even when you are using bathtub, have everything in one place and then start bathing of the dog. Try to have a leash, conditioner, towel, and shampoo in the bath place.
Conditioner is of helpful to make the combing activity easier later. Bathing should be a convenient activity to both the dog and the owner. This should not be a burden.
Pet health care: Treating and preventing pet illness
This is serious business. Your new pets health should be considered, even before you bring them into their new home. First, thing someone needs to do, is make an appointment with their local veterinarian. This is good way to treat any existing problems your pet may already have. The doctor will weigh your pet, and talk to you about many health options, that may help keep your pet healthy.
Treating existing problem early, can be a matter of life, and death. I can say this because, one of our family cats died. Our family thought we did everything right. The vet helped us understand his condition, He comforted us with words , that made us feel like it was going to happen anyway. The doctor advised us to start giving our other four cats this chewable table, that would help from spreading any contagious diseases, to the other cats. I’m just telling you this, to let you know ,to take your pets health seriously. One minute they may be find, and the next there not. If you watch closely, maybe you can save their life.
Preventive care is essential in helping your pet have a long healthy life, Make sure to schedule your pets annual check ups. The veteranrian will weigh, to see if their weight has increased, or decreased. The doctor has special foods you can purchase to aid in helping maintain, their weight. Their are all different types of pet food. Your pets doctor will advise you of the best one. I have found out personally, that cheaper brand can lead to problems. In my situation, one of my cats got loose stool, the others spit up alot. These can cause health problems. If,I keep my cat on a nutritional healthier brand of food, my cats have fewer problems.
I have to be honest. I know someone who buys the cheapest food and litter, and their pet cat is over fourteen years old. Every pet is different. One cat I own can’t seem to tolerate cat litter very well. His hair falls out on his lower part of his back. I had to try many of different brands . I finally found several brands that he could tolerate.
Do you own a pet, and want them to have the longest healthiest lives possible? Then give your pets the same care as you would your own children. Your pets are your children in a way. Treat you pets medical care seriously, and you may help add years to their life,
Veterinarians know alot about preventative health care. There’s usually pamphlets in the waiting room, that’s filled with good information. Go to the library, read all about pet care. Go online, and search the web. There is much knowledge, to be found, right at your fingertips.
If you want your pet’s health to stay healthy for years to come, pick up the phone, and make a call to your local veterinarians office. You will hopefully share many more years together.
Is it safe to feed a cat a vegan diet?
I’m going to have to use all the experience I’ve gained raising cats around our rural home to back up my thoughts on feeding cats vegan diets instead of some college degree in vegetarian skills. That gives an advantage over book reading because out of town here cats have been used for years as mice hunters. That has been picked up in the rural southwest because of all the poisonous rattle snakes that live on mice and then can bite and kill the registered horses kept around for various reasons.
That experience has shown me some cats after their natural hunting instinct has allowed them to kill some mouse and start eating it.
On that it can be assumed that cats have all the genetic back ground of animals like mountain lions who tend to eat a higher percentage of meat than us humans do. That is why even indoor cats still have the instinctive erg to stalk around the place where they live hunting when it gets dark. That erg is even evident while your pet is still just a kitten. That’s how and why it can be played with as it grows up.
After reaching the conclusion that it is natural for cats to hunger for some meat it must be cleared up that the vegetarian diet is not proper for many animals including humans and we are a lot different than pet cats. With our difference many people have taken up eating semi-vegetarian meals. That debate has even been amplified by animal lovers who claim butchering cattle is not the proper thing to do. I got to admit that it is really hard on one to slaughter a chicken he has raised himself. That small animal tends to become loved but in order to survive us humans need to eat enough amino acid to keep our body from our muscles to survive.
I must admit that pet ownership is not considered bodybuilding. But if certain nutritional facts hold true for us human meat eaters they probably do for our pet cats. One of the primary ones for both of us is food quality. Pet owners can’t help being suspicious of cat food after all the recalls that have happened lately. That is why I use the same shopping skills I use for myself.
One of the primary bits of knowledge that all pet owners should have is that most of those pet food companies don’t use quality meat to manufacture the pet food they sell. One time while I was truck driving and delivering freight to a major warehouse I had to Wait in line a bit before unloading. While standing there on the loading dock I talked with another truck drive who was delivering a load of cat food
